Every moment with her was like a supporting role in a Sylvia Sidney movie.

She was a harridan; grumpy, sharp, snappish and often hateful.

And that voice!

Gravelly, grating, grinding to the ears, it was a dusky, smokey sound.

Few seldom got through the smokescreen she kept around her.

Ah, but when they did, when the smoke cleared, she could be an angel.
