On November 20th, 1820, an 80 ton sperm whale attacked the Essex, a whaling ship from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
The ship was thousands of miles from home, and over 2,000 miles from the western coast of South America.
Why is this important?
Because this one event inspired Herman Melville to write the most boring book ever published, Moby Dick 30 years later.
Now that I’ve angered every English Teacher on the planet, all I can say is, “Read it yourself, if you dare.”
Moby Dick is considered “the Great American Novel” and a treasure of world literature.
Seriously people, I read it cover to cover after being inspired to do so at a concert where I heard a beautiful piece of music which was itself inspired by the book.
The music was better, and so was the movie.
Have a great Saturday!
