Here’s the story,
Of a lovely lady,
Who was bringing up three very lovely girls.
All of them had hair of gold,
Like their mother,
The youngest one in curls.
Jolie Gabor de Szigethy was born on September 29, 1896, she died over 100 years later on April 1, 1997.
She was pretty, poor, Jewish, and wanted to get heck out of Hungary. Arriving penniless from Europe after World War II, she settled eventually in California and proceeded to make “good matches” for her three beautiful daughters. And make them stars of sort as well.
Everyone called her “Mama Jolie”, she was the mother of actresses/socialites Magda, Zsa Zsa, and Eva,
Jolie had four husbands, only one of them really matters, Vilmos Gabor, he was the father of the three beautiful daughters that would take Hollywood by storm and marry, and marry, and marry many, many men.
Oldest daughter Magda, was married six times.
- 1937–1946: Jan Bychowski an RAF pilot who was said to have been a Polish Count, they were divorced.
- 1946–1947: William Rankin, they divorced.
- 1949–1950: Sidney R. Warren, they divorced.
- April 1956–1967: Anthony Gallucci, he left her a widow.
- December 5, 1970 – January 1971: George Sanders, a terrific British actor who you may remember from “All About Eve” and other great movies. He was Zsa Zsa’s ex husband, and the marriage only lasted six weeks. They were divorced. More on that later.
- 1972–1973: Tibor Heltai, they were divorced.
Zsa Zsa, her younger sister said of her after her death, “Magda, was tall, slim, with green eyes, speaking eleven languages, a horsewoman and a brilliant tennis player, she also started acting, winning parts in a variety of different plays.”
She was never a “star” and she didn’t do marriage well.
Zsa Zsa, the second daughter had nine husbands.
Burham Asaf Belge was a Turk, and a regular contributor to Kadro, a left-wing journal dedicated to “discussions on ideology and economic-development strategy”. They were married from 1937–1941, but it ended in divorce. Conrad Hilton, of the Hilton Hotel Chain, and Paris’ great-grandfather was her second husband. That marriage lasted a mere five years, Zsa Zsa got out with a butt-load of cash, but the marriage failed nonetheless. Again, we hear the name George Sanders. He was Zsa Zsa’s ex when he married Magda. During her marriage to Sanders, Gabor carried on a torrid affair with Dominican playboy Porfirio Rubirosa, beginning in 1952. Rubirosa left her after she appeared with a knot on her forehead which — Gabor said — was the result of a fall, but it was widely speculated that Rubirosa had punched her when she refused to leave her husband. He was notorious for many things, his sexual prowess and his wife-beating among them. Sanders marriage to Zsa Zsa lasted exactly five years as the divorce was final on their fifth anniversary. Happy anniversary? He eventually committed suicide, leaving a note that simply said, “Dear World, I am leaving because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool. Good luck.” Nice. Herbert Hunter wooed and wed Zsa Zsa on November 5, 1962 they stayed married for four years and divorced on March 3, 1966. Her tolerance was waning. Joshua S. Cosden, Jr. and the B movie queen were married from March 9, 1966 to October 18, 1967, guess what…D I V O R C E.! She married him for his money, he was an oil fortune heir. Jack Ryan, most noted for his design of the Barbie Doll – hmmm…wonder where he got the idea… married Zsa Zsa in January of 1975, it lasted until August of 1976. Michael O’Hara, her divorce attorney when she divorced number six, and I’m sure by this time he was on speed dial – married Zsa Zsa on August 27, 1976 – THREE DAYS LATER – but that didn’t last, they split UP in 1983, frankly at this point, dates don’t matter. And, Michael should have been smarter. Zsa Zsa said, “I’m a great housekeeper, everytime I leave a man, I keep his house.” And added, “I’ve never hated a man enough to give him his diamonds back!”. Her marriage to Felipe de Alba, a Mexican lawyer and movie character actor, who should have know better was annulled since they were married on a yacht before her divorce from O’Hara was final.
Enter Frederic, Prince von Anhalt, or as the folks at TMZ call him, Prince von A$$hole. The “Prince” and the B Movie Queen are still married. Zsa Zsa turned 94 on February 6, 2011. Born Hans Robert (some say Georg) Lichtenberg, the son of the Frankfurt, Germany Chief of Police, he was he was adopted as an adult in 1980 by Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt, the daughter-in-law of the last German Emperor William II. He’s about as much of a prince as I am.
She is most remembered for not only her many marriages, but her arrest. She slapped a Beverly Hills Policeman when he pulled her over.
She became a caricature of her self. She was once truly, a great beauty.
Zsa Zsa’s most memorable movie is the 1950s classic sci-fi film, “The Queen of Outer Space”. It’s a must see, seriously – it’s awesome.
Eva was the one in curls, which is interesting since she increased her fortune selling Eva Gabor Wigs.
You may remember her from reruns of TV’s Green Acres with Eddie Albert.
He’s about the only man she didn’t marry.
But in her day, Eva Gabor a.k.a. Lisa Douglas was a truly great beauty, and in my opinion, the most beautiful of all the Gabor sisters.
Eva had five husbands, apparently the underachiever in the family. Eric Drimmer, hsuband # 1 who lasted from 1939 to 1942, was an osteopath. A Doctor, her Jewish Mother was thrilled! Husband # 2, a realtor, Charles Isaacs made it almost six years from 1943 to 1949. John Williams, a plastic surgeon – whom I’m sure was kept busy by the girls, played the part of Mr. Eva Gabor from 8 April 1956 – 20 March 1957. Another divorce. Richard Brown was next. Debbie Rynolds recalls in her memoirs that her costar, “sexual free spirit Eva Gabor, took Debbie under her wing and gave her riotous lessons on how to be sexy.” Debbie adds, that Gabor was later caught UP in romantic scandal. Gabor had become engaged to Brown. Before he got involved with Gabor, Brown had broken off a relationship with a model. Shortly after the film company returned from Spain, the model committed suicide, leaving a note which said she could not go on without Brown. Although Gabor had nothing to do with Brown ending his previous affair, the tabloid headlines called Gabor a “love pirate.” Gabor married Brown later that year. They divorced in 1972. Frank Gard Jameson, a prominent Southern California aeronautics industry executive and philanthropist was a third generation Californian and the last husband of Eva. They were married ten years and ten years later in 1993, he died.
All in all, the Gabor sisters were married 20 times to 19 different men. There’s just not enough time to go into their affairs out side of the marriages, as I’m sure you’re bored already!
Oddly enough, all the marriages produced only one child. Francesca Hilton, Zsa Zsa’s daughter by Conrad.
Ok, so they weren’t the Brady Bunch!
