In 1895 King Kamehameha I (The Great) established the Kingdom of Hawai’i when he defeated Kalani’opu’u at Kealakekua Bay. He later unified the islands and is considered to be the Napoleon of the Pacific.
He met with Captain Cook and spent one night on the HMS Discovery. That is presumed to be his first encounter with non Hawai’ians. And where he first saw weapons that were “non stone-age”, you know, guns, cannons, and the like.
After defeating Kalani’opu’u, he set UP a kingdom with plans to insure its future.
It stayed that way until Sanford Dole and his US military backed cabal deposed the Monarch, Queen Liliuokalani in 1893.
Happy King Kamehameha Day!
