Today is the anniversary of writer Gore Vidal’s birth. He was born in 1925 and died in 2012.

I’m a fan of his work, if not the man.  He was terribly obnoxious, was as famous for his feuds and fights with other writers and celebrities, most notably Norman Mailer and Truman Capote as he was for his writing.

Aside from his body of work, which is important, he left us a quote or two.

Little gems like…”I‘m exactly as I appear. There is no warm, lovable person inside. Beneath my cold exterior, once you break the ice, you find cold water.”

And…”The unfed mind devours itself.”

His advice to writers…”Write something, even if it’s a suicide note.”

Which confirms the first quote…

He also claimed… ”I never miss a chance to have sex or appear on television.”

He was on Carson a lot.

The show, that is.

He was notorious for his malice… “It’s not enough to succeed, others must fail.” was another one that cuts.

And then there’s my favorite…”There is no human problem which could not be solved if people would simply do as I advise.”

Well, lookie there, I think I’ve found my new mantra!
