Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant.
Wilbur McLean moved to Appomattox Court House, VA to escape the ravages of the Civil War. Within minutes of the surrender, his home was stripped of most of its furnishings.
Though The War was not really over on that April day – the last battle was May 11-12 in Texas – , it for all purposes ended then.
There were battles to follow, other surrenders further South and in the West for sure, but for the Nation and for most, it ended April 9, 1865 in the living room of Wilbur McLean’s farm house.
