…with the sound of hooey!
We all love The Sound of Music, really, who wouldn’t? Great songs, good story, all’s well in the end, every body’s happy.
But it’s not actually the real story.
Maria von Tapp was born this day back in 1905.
Yes, she wanted to be a nun, yes she ended UP the governess of the von Trapp children, and yes, she eventually married the grumpy Captain.
She started out tutoring one child, ended UP becoming the governess for all of them, and the Captain seeing how much she loved them, he decided to marry her.
She was furious on her wedding day, or in her words, “blazing mad” as she wanted to be a nun – she claimed to be mad at both God and her husband.
She may also have been pregnant.
At least according to her naturalization papers. He daughter Rosemarie was born 2 months and 14 days after the wedding.
Of course, the family says she made a mistake on her naturalization papers.
With the exception of the Captain, the entire family became US citizens.
Georg held out, and died an Austrian citizen.
The most intriguing thing about the story is what Maria said about her marriage.
“I really and truly was not in love. I liked him but didn’t love him. However, I loved the children, so in a way I really married the children. I learned to love him more than I have ever loved before or after.”
Things aren’t always as they seem to be.
Oh, and by the way, they didn’t cross the Alps on foot in the wintertime either.
