…on Route 66.

Yesterday was the birthday of US Route 66.

Prior to the Interstate Highway System, there were roads and highways that crisscrossed America.  They were just all very, very different.

People drove cars like this…

…and this…

…and this…

They ate here…

…and here…

They stayed in places like this…

…and this…

And it took days to get from here to there.

The route ran from Chicago to LA, and covered 2,448 miles.

It wound through towns with tourist traps, speed traps, and magnificent vistas.

Like this…

…and this…

…and this…

There was a song written by Bobby Troup and recorded by Nat King Cole,

And it had it own TV show starring Martin Milner and George Maharis…

…everyone thought they were dreamy!

So, as you buzz past the mountains, valleys, rest stops, and exit signs at 70 miles an hour, just remember, there was a time when you could actually see America, and get your kicks.

On Route 66
