Stardate: November 3, 1957.
With the Cold War and the Race to Space in full swing, Laika, the Russian hound was sent into space aboard Sputnik II.
They were celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, and their leader, Nikita Kruschev wanted a “space spectacular”.

Kinda makes that eye-liner and mascara testing sound rather tame, now doesn’t it?
The Russians sending a dog into space first was a great prod to the American Space Program. We felt we were behind, and we knew we had to win the race to space.
The NASA heads went into high gear.
The Ruskies may have beaten the US into space, but the US beat them to the Moon! And with a man on board!
