One September 1, 1878, Emma Nutt became the first telephone operator…ever!
This is special why?
Well, I was the first male telephone operator hired at Dayton, Ohio’s Ohio Bell Telephone Company forty years ago this month!
Emma made $10 a month and worked a 54 hour work week. Nearly 100 years later, I was hired at a whopping $105 a week for a 40 hour work week.
There were boys hired as operators earlier in the 20th century, but they were so ‘rowdy’ they were replaced by young women, who were considered more sedate and proper.
And, serendipitously enough, today happens to be Lily Tomlin’s 73rd birthday!
So, here’s to Emma Nutt, she set the standard for great telephone operators to come.
