George Lindsey died Sunday, May 6. He was 83.
We all know him as Gomer Pyle’s cousin, Goober, on The Andy Griffith Show and the sequels that followed it.
He also did a stint on Hee-Haw.
He played a not so smart hayseed from the small town of Mayberry, NC. But, in reality, Goober, wasn’t such a goober.
He had a degree in Bioscience from the University of North Alabama. He graduated the year I was born, 1952. He was a double major, he had a degree in Physical Education as well. He funded academic scholarships at UNA.
He also established a movie festival at his Alma Mater, which still continues each spring.
George was a scholar athlete and a bit of renaissance man. He played football, acted in theatrical productions in college, was fond of quoting poetry, and had a special place in his heart for the Special Olympics. Over his life time, he raised more than $1,000,000 for the organization.
He taught school until he was accepted into the The American Theater Wing in New York City, where he graduated once again, earning a third degree.
He made us laugh with his remarkably bad Cary Grant impersonations, his antics on the Griffith show and Mayberry RFD, and he fooled us all on Hee-Haw.
Yeah, not a goober at all, he had us all fooled. But, we can forgive him, after all, he gave us Goober!
And we’ll miss him!
